Description/Comments
Having just celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2005, the Dixie Hummingbirds have not only preserved the gospel music tradition but have also broadened its appeal. They introduced various popular music genres that were rooted in gospel. While mainstream America may not have known their name, they knew their sound. In the 1940s, for example, they were singing the kind of a cappella harmonies that became known as doo-wop in the 1950s, and in the 1950s, they added electric guitar to their sound, which would later evolve as soul music of the 1960s. Isaac Hayes put it best in Jerry Zoltens book, Great God Amighty! The Dixie Hummingbirds: Celebrating the Rise of Soul Gospel Music. In the beginning, after the word, and before there was rap, hip-hop, disco, punk, funk, metal, soul, Motown, rock-a-billy, bebop, doo-wop, and the big band swing, there was the Dixie Hummingbirds. They sang through the Great Depression, the terms of thirteen presidents, four major wars, fiv!
e generations of Americans and seven decades of the twentieth century. They personify perseverance, talent and dedication. The Dixie Hummingbirds are indeed an American institution.

Appearing with The Dixie Hummingbirds will be the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Like the Dixie Hummingbirds the Dirty Dozen Brass Band (the Dozen) has developed a hybrid sound forged from blues and gospel and the modern influences of bebop, funk, R&B and pop. Their recent CD Funeral for a Friend recreates the jazz funeral that characterizes New Orleans traditions and culture, it is also a tribute to Anthony Tuba Fats Lacen, an original band member and friend who died in 2004. Their music celebrates the roots of New Orleans music as reflected in the doleful, melancholy dirges and the lively and spirited jazz style depicting the joyful celebration of life.

The Dozens appeal, success and longevity can be attributed to their receptivity and ability to adapt to different styles of music, observes Roger Lewis, an original band member. Over the years they have played with a diverse group of musicians, from Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, to the Black Crowes, Dave Matthews, Widespread Panic, and Modest Mouse. Demand for their music has taken them to more than 65 countries on 5 continents in 29 years.
