Are there things in life that should not change because of history and tradition? What happens if it is something that, a majority of a nation, feels should change? Learn from one country’s plight regarding laws, traditions and an evolving society when Supreme Court of Japan Justice Itsuo Sonobe (Ret.) explains the findings and recommendations of a committee that explored the possibility of enabling a female to ascend the Japanese throne. Currently, Japan’s law limits the accession to males only, and the 10-person committee, called the Council of Learned Persons, was assembled and tasked with studying a proposal to revise this regulation. Because there is no male-heir apparent in the world's oldest hereditary monarchy, three-year-old Princess Aiko, the only child of Crown Prince Naruhito would be the first possible reigning empress in modern Japan if the Imperial House Law is revised.

In addition to Sonobe, who served as the committee’s vice chairman, the committee was led by former president of To¯kyo¯ University Hiroyuki Yoshikawa and consisted of five other diverse academics, a businessman, a former deputy chief Cabinet secretary and a senior government official. The program will be in presented in English; an interpreter will be present.

Name of presenting organization: The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, strives to strengthen our diverse community by educating present and future generations in the evolving Japanese American experience in Hawai‘i. The Center features a Community and Historical Gallery, Resource Center, Kenshikan martial arts do¯jo¯, Seiko¯an Japanese teahouse and Gift Shop.
