Celebrate the wonderful work of NewberyAward-winning author Karen Hesse. Todd Sammonsor Mark Lawhorn will lead a discussion of Hesse's"Out of the Dust", which won the 1998 Newbery Medal.The book is about 14-year-old Billie Jo who tellsher mother died after an accident with burningkerosene. Putting the blame on herself and herfather, Billie Jo is not able to express herself throughher piano playing since the burns scarred her hands.She goes away but soon returns to her home "of dust"and realizes how much a part of her it is. Copies ofthe book will be available at the library before thesession. Participants will receive a free copy of"Out of the Dust, a free membership to Children'sLiterature Hawaii, and a free t-shirt, while supplieslast. This one-hour program is sponsored bythe Hawaii State Public Library System, Children'sLiterature Hawaii, the Friends of the Library ofHawaii, and supported by the Hawaii Council forthe Humanities. Program is suitable for ages12 to adults, although some libraries may haveslightly different target audiences.
