Noriko Asato, Ph.D., associate professor of Japanese at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will debut and speak about her new book, Teaching Mikadoism: The Attack on Japanese Language Schools in Hawai'i, California, and Washington, 1919 -- 1927. Funded by the Hawai'i Council for the Humanities, Asato explored the origins of Japanese language schools from the last days of the Kingdom of Hawai'i until World War I--when the Territory of Hawai'i tried to close down Hawai'i's Japanese language schools. Her research shows that Japanese language schools were key centers of the community, and focuses on the issei (first generation Japanese) struggle over Japanese and Japanese American identity in the islands.
"I wanted to explore this experience," Asato explained. "When most people read about Japanese language schools, it is almost only about how the nisei (second generation) disliked it. That was often true, but I don't think many people understand how big of a role the schools played for the issei, in terms of their becoming American, and claiming their rights to educate their offspring."
Asato will be available for book signing after her 30-minute presentation and question-and-answer segment.
