In 1996 diesel mechanic Bob King, owner/operator of the Cummins Engine dealership for Maui County, started Pacific Biodiesel on Maui by processing used cooking oil and grease from restaurants and hotels and converting it into a safer, cleaner, less toxic fuel. As the price of oil skyrocketed, demand for Pacific Biodiesel's fuel outstripped its supply. The company now has a plant on O'ahu, with refineries built in Virginia, Oregon, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Japan, Maryland, Texas and California. Winner of numerous awards, Pacific Biodiesel has been recognized by the Department of Energy as an industry pioneer. King and his wife Kelly, Marketing Director for PacBio, foresee raising agricultural crops as another source of feedstock for biodiesel.
