ART EXHIBIT GRAND OPENING
Exhibit open from July 27 - September 13, 2006
Modern lifestyles of Japanese reflected in 100 design products
Contemporary items reveal quirky, innovative ideas of today's Japanese designers

Ever wish there was a special chair that enabled you to comfortably sit in the traditional Japanese cross-legged position? How about being able to pull out a miniature washing machine from your closet when you only want to clean a couple dirty blouses and a pair of socks? In Japan, these products are readily available--made by designers to match the needs of today's Japanese society. And, such contemporary items--a "pod" chair suited for people who swore they would never be able to sit cross-legged and an electric bucket resembling a blender that cleans a few pieces of clothes--along with 100 other products, such as furniture, clothing, tableware and electrical appliances from Japan, will be on display in this internationally-traveling exhibition at the JCCH. Presented in partnership with the Consulate-General of Japan in Honolulu. Sponsored by the Japan Foundation.

Automatic rice cookers, the Kikkoman Soy Sauce dispenser and a portable ashtray created so one does not litter are all ingenious everyday objects created by Japanese designers. This exhibition presents contemporary Japanese design through a selection of approximately 100 everyday products--including furniture, clothing, tableware and electrical appliances. This visual summary of life in present-day Japan gives a substantial insight into Japanese urban culture today.

"There is no kimono (traditional Japanese clothing) or zabuton (a traditional Japanese pillow) in this exhibit," said Christy Takamune, JCCH Gallery Director. "This exhibit features everyday objects that show the lifestyles of Japanese today."
