Tuesday, September 5, 2006: Doors open at 6 p.m. Film starts at 7 p.m. Panel discussion and reception to follow.
With war fears rising, a Council for Inter-racial Unity organized in Honolulu in 1939 in support of Hawaiis large Japanese-ancestry community. One of its members, Shigeo Yoshida, forecasted, How we in Hawaii are going to live together after the war will depend on how we live together during the war. On December 7, 1941, the council sprang into actionsetting Hawaiis Japanese community on a different course than their counterparts on the West Coast, where more than 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were relocated from their homes and unjustly interned.
Tom Coffmans new film, The First Battle: The Battle for Equality in War-Time Hawaii, explores this behind-the-scenes battle for justice and equality in Hawaii and gives an explanation of why there was no mass internment of Hawaiis 160,000 people of Japanese ancestry in World War II.
The First Battle is the root story of a multicultural people and their basis in civic life, said Coffman, a producer, director and writer. Without begging the question of 9/11, The First Battle captures people successfully working together under extreme stress against great odds. It will change how viewers see Hawaii.
Coffman is author of non-fiction books, including Catch a Wave and The Island Edge of America; and is a producer/writer/director of films such as O Hawaii, Nation Within and Arirang I & II.
