Award winning actor Casey Groves will perform the one-man play “Damien” on Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mamiya Theater. Sponsored by Saint Louis School and Chaminade University, the performance is free and open to the public. For more information, call (808) 440-4279. The play tells the compelling story of the Belgium-born priest who ministered to the lepers on Moloka‘i before dying of leprosy in 1889 at the age of 49. Father Damien, a member of the Congregation of Sacred Heart, was beatified on June 4, 1995. The production of “Damien” featuring Groves has toured churches, conferences and schools nationally, as well as had two successful off-Broadway runs. Groves, who recently received the Damien-Dutton Award from the Damien-Dutton Society for his performance, has had two successful off-Broadway runs of Aldyth Morris’s play based on Hawai‘i’s Father Damien. Groves first took on the role of Father Damien as a student at De La Salle High School in New Orleans in 1987. After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico, he went on to study Shakespeare in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and at the British American Drama Academy. Groves has been featured extensively at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, D.C., and has appeared in many New York productions. ###
