Chaminade Caps Labor Day With Conference: "labor Issues In 21st Century Hawai'i"
Labor leader Ah Quon McElrath among speakers at three-day event


Chaminade University of Honolulu will observe Labor Day and the culmination of its yearlong 50th anniversary celebration with a three-day conference on "Labor Issues in 21st Century Hawai'i." The conference gathers specialists from the worlds of government, academia, nonprofit business and the local community, including Ah Quon McElrath, one of Hawai'i's most respected labor activists. In a series of panel and forum discussions, they will explore the workplace of the new millennium and key economic issues shaping this critical area. Events will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 5, 6 and 7, in the Ching Conference Center on Chaminade's Kaimuki campus. The public is welcome, encouraged to take part in the discussions and invited to stay for refreshments. TUES., SEPT. 5: "The Role of Labor Unions in the 21st Century"

  • Dr. Lawrence W. Boyd, Center for Labor Education and Research, University of Hawai'i -- West O'ahu
  • Dr. Jim Dator, political science professor, University of Hawai'i -- Manoa

WED., SEPT. 6: "Taxing the Working Poor"
  • Lowell Kalapa, Tax Foundation of Hawai'i
  • Kurt Kawafuchi, director, State of Hawai'i Department of Taxation
  • Wayne Tanna, accounting professor, Chaminade University of Honolulu

THURS., SEPT. 7: "The Economy and Affordable Housing"
  • Kent Anderson, director, Family Promise
  • Craig Watase, president, Mark Development
  • Frank Bailey, history instructor, Chaminade University of Honolulu


Dr. Jan Jendera, economics professor at the Prague Technical Institute in the Czech Republic, will introduce each event. Dr. Barbara Poole-Street, economics professor at Chaminade University, will moderate. The events will begin with brief statements from the panelists and then move into an extended question-and-answer session with the audience.

The "Labor Issues in 21st Century Hawai'i" conference reflects Chaminade University's 50-year mission of educating students for life, service and successful careers, and its commitment to serving its community. A fitting close to the University's yearlong 50th anniversary celebration, this conference marks one of the last official anniversary functions before the closing liturgical ceremony on Sept. 16.
