 Three disturbing tellers convene to tell Obake Tales (Japanese Ghost Stories) at the Japanese Culture Center (2454 Beretania). 6pm sharp it all begins with ‘Tangentz’ Butoh Dancing before Lopaka Kapanui (Oahu Ghost Tours), Jeff Gere (Talk Story Festival and Radio, born on Halloween), and Alton Chung (local from Portland who LOVES Obake!) SPOOK YOU OUT! Also koto player Darin Miyashiro and a shadow puppet show. Bar on 5th floor opens at 6pm. NOT for kids. Come, but not alone!
The JCCH will present an evening event for the more daring. Those brave enough can embark on this super-scary storytelling journey with Alton Chung, Jeff Gere and Lopaka Kapanui as they draw us into the ghastly world of obake and other supernatural tales of Hawai‘i and Japan. Artistic director Lori Ohtani and her group Tangentz—which specializes in butoh, a modern style of Japanese dance—will also present a haunting performance. Recommended attendance: ages 13 and up. Admission is free.
