Event Name: Genealogy Workshop: Finding Your Roots
Location of the event: Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH), Fifth Floor
Date and Time: Saturday, October 13, 2007, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Description of event: Learn how to tend to your family tree at the Genealogy Workshop: Finding Your Roots presented by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH) and the Hawai'i Hiroshima Heritage Study Group (H3SG) on Saturday, October 13; from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the JCCH fifth floor. Attendees will participate in a three-segment workshop that covers varying subjects from basic information needed to begin their family's genealogy research to an introduction of genealogy computer software as well as limited Japanese translations of family documents, such as their koseki tØhon (household registry). This year's workshop will also feature presentations by other ethnic study groups, including the Honolulu Genealogical Society, Portuguese Genealogical Society of Hawaii and the Okinawan Genealogical Society. Cost is $50 per JCCH member; $60 per non-member. Fee includes a 143-page manual, lunch and refreshments and limited translation services. Registration recommended by Monday, Oct. 1. For more information or to register, call the JCCH at (808) 945-7633
Participants in the workshop will be receiving more than two decades worth of collected strategies and advice on how to begin research on their family lineage, said Bernice K. Hirai, PhD., coordinator of the genealogy workshop since its inception in 1986 and adviser to the Hawai'i Hiroshima Heritage Study Group.
Through their own trials and tribulations, the H3SG members developed this ever-evolving genealogy workshop and a "how-to" manual, now in its fifth printing, which provides practical instructions for research in Hawai'i and Japan.
"Researching one's genealogy is to really learn about one's self," said Hirai. "To learn about your past is to find out who you are because you do not just spring up in life--you come from somewhere."
The genealogy workshop will give direction to those who have yet to trace their family roots, and who don't know where to start, said Mandy Westfall, the JCCH Programs Director. "Genealogy is more than just looking up names and pictures of people who died before you were born," Westfall said. "It gives you the ability to reflect back on all the people who, in one way or another, helped give you the opportunities you have today."
Cost/Entry Fee: $50 for JCCH members; $60 for non-members. Fee includes a 143-page manual, lunch and refreshments and limited translation services.
