"BIG READ HAWAI'I" PRESENTS
FREE TEACHERS' WORKSHOP
AT CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY

"Big Read Hawai'i" will hold a free teachers' workshop entitled "Using Literature and Biography to Teach History and Reading" on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., in Henry Hall 225 at Chaminade University, 3140 Wai'alae Avenue, Honolulu, Hawai'i 96816.

Designed especially for social studies and language arts teachers, the workshop will feature Mitch Yamasaki, Chaminade University; Craig Howes, Center for Biographical Research; Ruth Hsu, University of Hawai'i at Manoa; and Seri Luangphinith, University of Hawai'i at Hilo as guest presenters. Participating teachers will receive both the Teacher's Guide to 'The Joy Luck Club' prepared by the National Endowment for the Arts, and Immigration: Triumph and Tragedy in History produced by National History Day and ABC Clio.

Presented by the Hawai'i Council for the Humanities, the workshop is co-sponsored by Chaminade University, the Hawai'i Council for History Education and "Big Read Hawai'i."
"Big Read Hawai'i" is part of the National Endowment for the Arts "Big Read" program whose initiative is to restore reading to the center of American culture. "Big Read Hawai'i" is coordinated by the Hawai'i Capital Cultural District, Hawai'i Council for the Humanities, Hawaii State Public Library System, Manoa Foundation and the Hawai'i Department of Education.
