CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY HOSTS WORLD INDIGENOUS NATIONS HIGHER EDUCATION CONSORTIUM CONFERENCE

Chaminade University will host the 2007 World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC) Conference on Oct. 21-23. Nearly 200 participants are expected to attend from all over the world and across the state. Delegates will be welcomed in a protocol ceremony starting at Mauna 'Ala in Nu’uanu followed by a reception at the Mystical Rose Oratory at Chaminade University.

“It is an appropriate match for Chaminade University,” said Claire Pruet, Chaminade University Director of Student Resource Development. “The mission of WINHEC is to provide a forum for Indigenous peoples to pursue common goals through the means of higher education. Chaminade is always looking for ways to partner with civic and church communities, offering its academic and intellectual resources in the pursuit of common aims.”

The three day conference at Chaminade University will include nation reports from Indigenous peoples from Alaska, Aotearoa, America, Canada, Australia, Saamiland, Somalia, Taiwan and Hawai`i and a special welcome introducing the presidents of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC). There will also be a variety of panel presentations, including a special presentation by Buffy Saint-Marie of "The Cradleboard Project." Other presentations include a presentation “Designing Indigenous Assessments – Achieving Higher Achievements and Aspirations” with Dr. David Sing and a "Panel Presentation: Some Thoughts on the Future of Indigenous Research-Three Hawaiian Perspectives" with Dr. Shawn Kanaiaupuni, Renee Louis, ABD, and Dr. Manulani Aluli Meyer. First purposed and planned at conferences at the University of Alaska in 1993 and the University of Hawaii in 1999, WINHEC was officially formed in August 2002 in Kananaskis, Canada, at a meeting of the World Indigenous Peoples Conference in Education (WIPCE). Each year WINHEC holds an annual conference in member states or countries. The conference was held in Hawai’i in 2003, in Australia in 2004, in New Zealand in 2005 and in Minnesota in 2006.
