| Description/Comments |
Event Name: Okinawan Family Kimono Dressing
Location of the event: Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH), fifth floor
Date and Time: Sunday, November 4, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Description of event: Join the JCCH as it presents the rich cultural history of the traditional dances of Okinawa when distinguished teacher Toshiko Chinen provides event participants the opportunity to be dressed and photographed in the traditional garb of Japan's southernmost prefecture. Sponsored by the JCCH, Yasuko Arakawa of Aki no Kai Okinawa Koto group and Dr. Bernice Hirai of Sawai Koto Kai of Hawaii, this event will give men, women and children (aged three and up) the chance to be properly dressed in Okinawan kimono attire (includes hair and make-up) by Chinen, who will share her knowledge and collection of traditional clothing from Okinawa. Once dressed, participants can capture this memory with professional photographs by King Digital Imaging Center. Reservations recommended by October 20.
A resident of Okinawa, Chinen began her career in dento buyo or Okinawan classical dance in 1963, entering the Tamagusuku Setsuko Buyo Dojo. In addition to numerous awards and performing around the world, Chinen became a master instructor in 1993. In 1998, she established the Rin no Kai, an independent school dedicated to the cultivation and teaching of traditional Okinawan dance. In 2004, she received the distinction of Denshosha Ninten, meaning she has been entrusted in passing down the art of traditional Okinawan dancing to future generations.
Cost/Entry Fee: $64 per JCCH Member; $80 per non-member (price includes traditional hair and makeup; cost of photos is separate).
