Event Name: An Offering of Rice Book Signing with Mavis Hara

Location of the event: Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH), fifth floor lounge

Date and Time: Saturday, January 26, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Description of event: Meet Hawai'i author Mavis Hara as she shares her newest book, An Offering of Rice, at this JCCH book signing. Currently a reading instructor at Kapi'olani Community College, Hara draws on her Sansei roots in Hawai'i's plantations to present day status as a breast cancer survivor, adoptive mother and military wife in An Offering of Rice, a collection of short stories and poetry published by Bamboo Ridge Press.

Born in Honolulu, Hara has lived in Hawai'i, Ohio, California, Alabama, Illinois and Japan. Previously, she taught English at middle and high schools in rural areas of O'ahu and on the continental U.S. She has published numerous stories and poems, notably her award-winning story Carnival Queen, and has been anthologized in Asian American fiction and poetry collections such as Growing Up Asian American.

Cost/Entry Fee: Free admission. Book cost is $12 for JCCH members; $15 for non-members.
