Description/Comments
Celebrate Reading’s free reader- and writer-supporting 11th annual Literature Festival on O'ahu is being held at the University of Hawai'i's Campus Center Ballroom on Saturday April 12, beginning with a performance reading at 9:00 a.m. and affording three 45-minute break-out sessions before closing, after a final reading, at 2:00 p.m.

This intergenerational festival affords readers from ages twelve through the eighties a variety of conversations on reading and also writing workshop options. Seventeen visiting and local authors discuss their work, and co-facilitators lead open conversations on additional works that people of all ages can enjoy--by Khaled Hosseini, Laurie Halse Anderson, Walter Dean Myers, Mary Larson and Ralph Fletcher. Teachers and students can talk about Shakespeare and theater adaptations with UHM drama directors and a dramaturg, attend workshops on performance poetry (Kealoha), editing poetry (Frank Stewart), the craft of the journalist (Jim Lynch), the Pidgin short story (Darrell Lum and Lee Tonouchi) writing fantasy (Kate Elliott), working research up into novels (Cynthia Kadohata), and making an international splash with your first novel (Patricia Wood).

We are flying in Cynthia Kadohata from California, Graham Salisbury from Oregon and Jim Lynch from Washington. Smaller festivals will be held on Lana’i (April 10) Moloka’i (April 11) and Maui (April 14). In each case the idea is to read ahead of the festival so that readers can be celebrated along with the writers. Some sessions celebrate oral literature (Jon Osorio is our story-teller from Hawaiian history, and Jamaica Osorio and Kealoha are performance poets.) Our two young poets Sage U’ilani Takehiro and Ann Inoshita will read their poems alternately and then everyone present can talk about them in turn.
