Hawai‛i History Day is an exciting year long co-curricular program that is part of the National History Day program. The program encourages young people to explore a historical subject related to an annual theme by incorporating research and critical thinking skills to produce historical projects in one of five different formats. This year’s theme is “Conflict and Compromise in History.”

“With History Day, participants look closer at historical events and tie them into a national theme. This process moves students beyond memorization and provides opportunities for research, analysis, and presentation. It builds confidence and critical thinking skills,” said Jane Silva, state coordinator for Hawai‛i History Day. “Every year I am constantly amazed by History Day’s impact on students. For some, History Day literally changes their lives. Some students who were strictly ‘math and science’ buffs made dramatic turnarounds and went on to college as History majors,” she added.

Students participate in History Day fairs at the district, state and national levels. Historians, educators and professionals in related fields evaluate students’ work at each level. Award-winning entries at Hawai‛i History Day on April 19 are eligible to participate in the National History Day event held June 15-19 in Washington, D.C.

Last year Hawai‛i students, Klleirr Tuyay and Mikia Weidenbach from Waialua High and Intermediate School, placed second in the nation at National History Day 2007 for their documentary project: Polio: Triumphs Over the Virus that Crippled America. Last year, six of the ten Hawai‛i senior project entries received outstanding awards in the national awards ceremony.
