In Japan, Tanabata (evening of the seventh) celebrates the Japanese folk tale of Orihime and Hikoboshi, two star-crossed lovers who are separated by the Milky Way and only allowed to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. In some communities, they celebrate this date with wish writing, sometimes in the form of poetry, on tanzaku (small pieces of paper) and hanging them on bamboo alongside other colorful decorations that represent long life, family safety and prosperity.
At this JCCH event, guests can also take part in this wish-making tradition by making wishes on tanzaku and stringing it on bamboo branches in hopes that Orihime picks them up on her way to meet Hikoboshi. Ben Franklin Crafts will also present a craft booth where guests can create make-n-take a crystal star charm or a mini star book that can be used as a scrapbook.
Originally based after the Chinese celebration, Festival to Plead for Skills, Tanabata was adopted by Japan's Kyoto Imperial Palace during the Heian Period. The festival spread to the general public by the early Edo period, and became mixed with various Obon traditions, and developed into the modern Tanabata festival. During the Edo period, girls wished for better sewing and craftsmanship and boys wished for better handwriting by writing their wishes on strips of paper.
The Starry Summer Night: Tanabata Matsuri in Hawai'i is made possible in large part through a generous grant by the Hawaii Tourism Authority - City and County of Honolulu County Product Enrichment Program, Ben Franklin Crafts and Curt Otaguro.
The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH), a non-profit organization, strives to share the history, heritage and culture of the evolving Japanese American experience in Hawai'i. Located in MØ'ili'ili, the JCCH features a Community and Historical Gallery, Resource Center, Kenshikan martial arts dØjØ, SeikØan Japanese teahouse and Gift Shop.
