• Dance Troupe Perform "Treasures of Okinawa" at Aina Haina Library

The Jimpu Kai USA, Kin Ryosho Ryukyu Geino Kenkyusho, Performing Arts Academy will present "Treasures of Okinawa: Uchinaa nu Takara," a free lecture-demonstration program at Aina Haina Public Library on Saturday, October 30 at 10:30 a.m. The program will be conducted in the Library's Auditorium.

Sensei Cheryl Yoshi Nakasone will lead a dance troupe from Jimpu Kai USA, Kin Ryosho Ryukyu Geino Kenkyusho, Performing Arts Academy as they introduce the music, culture and dances of Okinawa, and perform a selection of classical and contemporary Okinawan dances.

Sensei Nakasone began training and performing Okinawan dances in Honolulu at an early age. Nakasone graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and continued her studies in Okinawa under the guidance of Ryosho Kin, designated by the Japanese Government as a National Living Treasure.

The one-hour program is suitable for ages 5 and older and sponsored in part by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through funding from the Hawaii State Legislature, by the National Endowment for the Arts, and by the Friends of the Aina Haina Library.

Contact the Library two weeks in advance if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.

Aina Haina Public Library is located at 5246 Kalanianaole Highway in the Aina Haina Shopping Center. For more information, please call the Library at 377-2456.
