In celebration of Earth Day 2011, "Plastic: Impacts on Your Health, Marine Life and the Environment," a free program, will be presented at Aina Haina Public Library on Saturday, April 23 at 3 p.m. in the Meeting Room.

Suzanne Frazer, Co-Founder and President of the Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawaii (B.E.A.C.H.), will discuss the issue of plastic in our environment and how it is both harmful to our health as well as to marine life. Learn what chemicals are found in plastic, the impacts of marine debris on marine life, and simple steps to take to protect your health as well as the environment.

An art project display on marine debris impacts, featuring artwork by Hahaione Elementary School students, will accompany the program. The display may be viewing during normal library hours through Thursday, April 28.

B.E.A.C.H. is an all volunteer, non-profit organization that brings awareness and solutions to marine debris through environmental education, marine debris removal and research, and campaigns to reduce plastic and prevent litter. Frazer and Co-Founder Dean Otsuki, received the 2008 Living Reef Award and their volunteer efforts have also been recognized by the Hawaii State Senate, the City and County of Honolulu and the Mayor of Honolulu.

This 90-minute program is suitable for ages 12 and older. Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.
