Zakariya Amataya, Thailand's award-winning, Ginsberg-inspired, Sunni hipster poet joins local slam poet favorite Kealoha in an evening of poetry from the edge.

Amataya is the 2010 winner of the S.E.A. Write Award for poetry, a first in numerous categories. He is the first poetry winner who writes primarily in free verse and not rhyme and Thailand's first Muslim recipient. Born in Narathiwat province, one of Thailand's three Muslim-majority southern provinces, Amataya's poetry often pulls from the struggles associated with this part of south-east Asia.

Kealoha is the recognized leader of slam poetry in Hawaii. He is the founder of 'HawaiiSlam, Youth Speaks Hawaii', a participant in the Artists in the Schools program, and has finished as high as 8th in the National Poetry Slam.

Ticket prices vary, call 956-8246 for information. Tickets available beginning May 16 at www.etickethawaii.com, call 944-2697 or visit any UH Ticket outlet. Call 956-8246 for more information.

ABOUT KEALOHA

Kealoha is an internationally acclaimed poet and storyteller. He is the first poet in Hawai`i's history to perform at a governor's inauguration, and in 2010 he was selected as a master artist for a National Endowment for the Arts program. In the 7 years that he has represented Hawai`i at the National Poetry Slam, he has performed on the finals stage 4 times, was ranked in the top ten of the nations best poets in 2007, and was honored as a "National Slam Legend" in 2010.

Kealoha was featured on HBO’s Brave New Voices series presented by Russel Simmons, and he has performed at hundreds of live venues throughout the world including the Schiffbau (Zurich, Switzerland), the Bienal do Ibirapuera (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and the 2007 NFL Pro Bowl halftime show. He is the poetic vocalist for Henry Kapono’s “Wild Hawaiian” project (nominated for a Grammy), and has served as Hawai`i’s SlamMaster since 2003.

He graduated with honors from MIT with a degree in Nuclear Physics (and a minor in writing), served as a business consultant in San Francisco, and played around as a surf instructor prior to becoming a professional poet in 2002.
