November 19 (Saturday), 10:30 a.m. - "Hanafuda: Hawaii Style." Hanafuda is a Japanese card game played with 12 suits of seasonal flowers or plant cards representing the 12 months of the year. Helen Nakano will teach the basics of Hanafuda: Hawaii Style, a cherished island tradition once enjoyed in the plantation communities by children and adults of all cultures. Nakano will also share myths and symbolism of the card designs, and discuss methods of teaching others the game. In the second half of the program, participants will be encouraged to form teams and will receive "hands on" game experience. This two-hour program is suitable for ages 8 and older.
