“Postcards from Rotorua”
by artist Mark Chai

show runs from March through April 2012
opening reception Friday, April 6, 10pm-Midnight

art@town’s series 17 presents, on the walls, “Kindling” paint on wood by Robert DeLoach and, in the pukas, “Postcards from Rotorua” by Mark Chai. Both installations are wood inspired and is a perfect match with town’s renovated reclaimed wood look.

On the Walls: The inspiration for Robert DeLoach’s art comes largely from the natural world. Robert feels that living in Hawaii is a blessing, and provides him constant visual stimulation and divine inspiration. He loves making art of trees out of wood and paper. And prefers to paint on actual cuts of wood, or wooden panels made of maple or popular traditional canvas supports. Robert recently had access to reclaimed wood culled from the trees of Oahu’s highly revered Waimea Valley. The two types of wood used in this exhibit are Milo, which has many historical uses in Polynesian culture, and Chinaberry, which is a true mahogany. His passion for trees come from experiences from his childhood, playing in the woods behind his childhood house where there was a tiny creek and acres of pine, oak, apple, maple, dogwood, willow, and cherry trees.

In the Pukas: In his latest metamorphosis of Town's 5 by 5 grid, Mark Chai has reincarnated segments from his previous arrangement and juxtaposed them around a central assemblage of new organic work. Inspired from a recent trip to Aotearoa (New Zealand), he calls this installation Postcards from Rotorua. Utilizing material that he has squirreled away in his work studio, Mark has chosen to depict two memorable moments, hiking through a redwood forest and visiting the Wai O Tapu geothermal pools. Mark says,"Walking through the forest was like taking a step back in time being among giant ferns and towering redwoods."

In stark contrast the geyser pools seemed to be on another planet. The ground around the bubbling pools was ash white from the seeping steam vents. Coming upon some of these raised pools was like seeing islands in an alien landscape.

Artists Bio:
Robert DeLoach
Rob DeLoach grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and was exposed to creative work from birth. His father was an architect and painter and his mother an avid photography who developed cooking and craftwork into an artform. There was always great support for Rob’s creative efforts, however, playing sports year-round was truly mainstay of Rob’s childhood. It was not until after playing football and pursing the opportunity to play as a pro, did Rob realize his true passion was the act of creating art.
Wilth minimal formal training, Rob dove into an intense period of focused experimentation using many different artistic styles and mediums. Considered a self-taught artist, his mixed media work has evolved into a style that is dominated by color, patter, and the line work. Rob’s art is heavily influenced by the natural world and nostalgia of his childhood. His work is typically created on wood panels, or on reclaimed cross cuts of trees whose wood grain patterns are included as a part of the completed work.
Rob’s art has been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows, and included in private collections around the world. Among other art commission opportunities, he has created work for The University of Maryland and the Georgia Department of Trade and Tourism. His work has been featured on several major network television shows such as ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover, and by prominent international music stars include Ziggy Marley and George Clinton. Rob currently lives and works on O’ahu where he is blessed by a daily abundance of divine inspiration.

Mark Chai

Mark Chai is an award-winning, Hawaiian-Chinese artist who combines his formal training in art with a lifelong passion for aesthetic design to create beautiful lamps, furniture, large installations, sculpture and recycled work.

Although renown for his work with recycled materials, today Mark is also excited about using fine woods to create pendant lamps of interlocking pieces. Each time he gets an idea for a new form, he calculates the angles for the pieces by hand, not by computer.

Mark has been featured in the media, including newspapers and television. His work has received awards and recognition in juried shows and prestigious galleries, and is held in many private collections.

Mark grew up on O'ahu, the son of Norman and Elizabeth Pa Chai. He is married to author Makana Risser Chai. He attended Damien High School, and received his BFA at the University of Hawaii.
