“Hats Off” to the American Red Cross

The Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross is holding its annual Hats Off event on March 15-17, 2013. Off duty firefighters, military, and other volunteers will take their hats off and ask the public to fill their hats with donations for the Red Cross. Donations may also be made online at www.hawaiiredcross.org.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, volunteers will collect donations at Walmart stores statewide. On Saturday, March 15, volunteers will be at 3 other locations on Oahu.

“In Hawaii, we respond to disaster about every 4 days, providing emergency assistance and emotional support to victims of every day disasters like house fires and floods,” said Coralie Chun Matayoshi, CEO Hawaii State Chapter. “We also need to be prepared for major disasters, like recent tsunami scares that could have devastated our islands. We are not a government agency and rely on donations from the people of Hawaii to provide these critical services to our community. In addition to responding to disaster victims with caring and compassion, we help prepare families and businesses for disasters, teach lifesaving skills to 20,000 people a year, and provide emergency communications for military service members and their families.”
