Who We Are
We are UHM graduate students and graduates, mostly in urban planning, some living in Moiliili and surrounding neighborhoods. We began thinking about ways to bring together people -- park users, local residents, students, etc -- in creative and accessible ways , to share knowledge and spark dialogue. We're honored to have received funding for this project from the Hawaii People's Fund and from the UH Student Activity and Program Fee Board to do 2 events this fall, one in September and one in November.
What We've Already Done
November 2012 - Our first event focused on the Bike-In aspect. Cycle Manoa hosted a mobile repair shop and the Hawaii Bicycling League. The Honolulu Printmakers set up a screenprinting press that was a huge hit with kids and grownups. We screened short films about bikers in Athens, surfboard makers, and a feature documentary about youth and community empowerment. Kanu Hawaii closed the night with thoughts on island sustainability. http://vimeo.com/57905997
April 2013 - Our second event celebrated creativity in all its forms. Along with the Bike-In and a screening of a youth poetry documentary, we hosted an open mic that featured poets and the Palauan community dance group. Face painting delighted the kids while salsa dancing wowed everyone. http://vimeo.com/68584100
