Musical Innovators Conjugacion, Kalahiki, and Okami Mix It Up at HPR's Atherton June 27

Individually known as pioneers and polymaths, Tony Conjugacion, Starr Kalahiki, and Alvin "Pops" Okami combine their formidable talents on Friday, June 27 at Hawaii Public Radio's Atherton Studio. The evening showcases their eclectic repertoire of jazz, pop, and show tunes -- even an operatic aria and "hapa-haole" songs. Reservations for this inspired collaboration may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during business hours. Tickets are $35 general, $30 for HPR members, and $20 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaii Public Radio, 738 Kaheka Street. The house opens at 7:00 p.m.; concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Tony K. Conjugacion is an award-winning recording artist, composer, television personality, stage actor, producer, director, and kumu hula. In 1985, Tony's debut recording "Hawaiian Passion" was nominated for 11 Na Hoku Hanohano awards and won Album of the Year, Traditional Hawaiian Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Male Vocalist of the Year.

Conjugacion was cast in the original Broadway production (1991) of Miss Saigon in New York. He has been teaching hula in Hawai‘i and abroad for over 20 years and is kumu hula for Halau Na Wainohia. He is also the founder and executive director for Lamaku Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, education and preservation of Hawaiian culture, with an emphasis on the performing arts. Since August 2011, Conjugacion has been performing Saturday nights at Disney's ‘Aulani Resort.

Starr Kalahiki has been singing for as long as she can remember. She credits Nola Nahulu, then choral director at the University Lab School, with first recognizing her talent and encouraging her to audition (at the age of 16) for the Hawaii Opera Theatre Chorus. Kalahiki sang in six operas with HOT and performed in local theatre, including ‘Ulalena on Maui. She has fronted an alternative rock band, sung with R&B and funk groups, and was the jazz headliner on the Star of Honolulu dinner cruise. She released her debut CD Salt which won her 2012 Na Hoku Hanohano awards for Most Promising Artist and Jazz Album of the Year. She is currently working on several musical projects spanning the musical genre landscape from new contemporary Hawaiian music to big band and alternative tracks.

Alvin "Pops" Okami has been called by many a modern-day "Renaissance Man." He is an inventor, innovator, accomplished oboist, industrial designer, as well as a composer/arranger, singer, graphic designer, and an overall "idea man." He began his musical career as a vocalist, accompanying ‘ukulele virtuoso Herbert "Ohta-san" Ohta in Waikiki nightclubs. He pursued a degree in music and became the Royal Hawaiian Band's oboe soloist. He has since become known as one of the premier craftsmen of ‘ukulele under his company KoAloha Ukulele. In 2009, "Pops" released a Hoku-nominated (Most Promising and Jazz categories) CD entitled Uke and Me. A highly anticipated solo recording of his original compositions will be officially released in the latter part of 2014.
