- Find someone to move your garbage cans back into place.
- Find someone to check mail, packages, & newspapers.
- Leave a radio on, preferably on a timer.
- Let your neighbors know that you're going away and when you're coming back.
- If away for an extended period of time: Have someone mow your lawn or rake your yard. A burglar will assume the resident is at home and tending to his property.
- Leave a light on somewhere in the house, preferably on a timer.
- Check your motion detector lights to make sure they work before leaving.
- Never leave a message on your answering machine that tells the caller that you are away from home. Instead, say: "I'm not available now."
- Have a neighbor park in your driveway or in front of your house.
