PHILOSOPHY
There are many styles of the hula, passed down over generations, but no single style is more correct than the others. One who truly appreciates the hula must have the ability to differentiate between them all. My kumu, Leimomi I Maldonado, would often invite her own teachers, colleagues, and friends to share their specific knowledge of the hula with her students.
My uniki (ceremonial graduation) as a kumu hula certainly does not mean the end of my hula education. In fact, I look forward to continuing to learn, each and every day, from my kumu, my students, and all who are brought into my life by the hula.
KUMU HULA - LAUREN KANOELANI CHANG
My parents first encouraged my study of hula with the "House of I Hula Academy" and my dear kumu, Lei Maldonado, at the age of 6. Twenty years later, I was proud to be the first kumu hula to uniki from Aunty Lei s h lau, Ka Hale I o K hala. Mahalo n ho i to all my kumu lelo Hawai i from Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawai i, M noa. Ever seeking knowledge, I continue my study of Hula Olapa with Uncle Kimo Alama Keaulana and Hula Pahu with Uncle Ed Kalahiki.
On May 1st I will end my "reign" as City & County of Honolulu Lei Day Queen 2010!
