Description/Comments
Volunteer mentors are friends, listeners and guides to youth impacted by incarceration. They dedicate 4 hours of face to face time a month up to one year to their mentee. Mentees are boys and girls from the Kaimuki, Kahala, Aina Haina, Manoa and Makiki communities between the ages of 4-17 years old with a parent in prison.

About Keiki O Ka `Āina
Keiki O Ka `Āina Family Learning Centers (KOKA-FLC) is a Non Profit 501(c)(3) Corporation that was established in 1996 to serve the needs of the Native Hawaiian community within the context of culturally appropriate educational programs.

PROGRAMS
Our organization develops and implements "new" Native Hawaiian community site-based programs for parents and preschool children aged 0-5. In addition, we provide support services to enhance both existing and new child development programs. These specialized services include Native Hawaiian cultural enrichment services, development of family literacy curriculum, family mental wellness programs, English/Hawaiian curriculum adaptation and child care programs. A newly developed research and evaluation component is an integral part of our overall program.

In 2006-2007, we serviced over 2,000 children and parents at 40 different sites on Oahu and Maui.

Our Mission
The Mission of Keiki O Ka `Āina Family Learning Centers (KOKA-FLC) is to build strong communities by building strong families.

We do this by communicating the vital importance of education, advocating for literacy, supporting parents as their child's first and best teacher, and empowering families to undertake leadership roles in their communities. All of this is done within the context of Hawaiian language, traditions and culture.

Our Vision
We envision a Hawai'i in which Hawaii's children begin school with the attitudes and skills necessary for success. We provide families with the support systems and resources they need to become self confident, self-determined, and self-sustaining. We see a Hawai'i where our programs flourish on every island, setting the standard for family-based education in the state. "Strong communities are developed by building strong families".

Strengthening Literacy
Keiki O Ka `Āina Family Learning Centers has developed a comprehensive, holistic approach to strengthen "literacy".

Reducing or Eliminating Barriers to Literacy
Families are invited to participate in new and established programs in ways that create the atmosphere and enhance the environment for real learning to occur. We are addressing these barriers through the following:
  • Incorporating new, age-appropriate curriculum
  • New ways to foster parent/child participation
  • An emotional wellness program for parents
  • Support for culture and values within communities
  • Employment opportunities and training for staff and parents
  • Native Hawaiian enrichment activities
  • Curriculum written and translated into Hawaiian.
