Brian Niiya Joins Japanese Cultural Center Of Hawai'i Administration As Resource Center Director HONOLULU--Brian Niiya, former staff member at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles and the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, has been hired for the newly created position of resource center director at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH). Niiya started the position on August 1."This step represents a significant investment in the future of the JCCH as Brian Niiya is the JCCH's first-ever Resource Center director," said Riki May Amano, JCCH president/executive director. "Under Brian's leadership, the Resource Center will undoubtedly continue to grow and mature as an institution that preserves and educates about the Japanese American experience in Hawai'i--the only place in the world with broad, relevant expertise on this unique issue." JCCH Board of Directors Chairman Dean K. Hirata said, "As a writer, historian, curator and editor, Brian brings a vast amount of experience and knowledge of our community that will help fulfill the mission of the Center and build for its future." Niiya has served as curator of numerous exhibitions such as More Than a Game: Sport in the Japanese American Community, Sumo USA: Wrestling the Grand Tradition and 'A'ala: The Story of a Japanese Community in Hawai'i. In 2003, Niiya co-founded Historyworks LLC, a company that provides project management and consultations for museum services. "I am honored to be the first JCCH resource center director and look forward to the challenge ahead," said Niiya. Niiya has also served as editor of numerous publications on the Japanese American experience, including the Japanese American History: An A-to-Z Reference from 1868 to the Present, which was selected by the New York Public Library as one of the "Outstanding Reference Books of the Year." Niiya has served as chief acting curator and manager of the research department as well as collection manager at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California. The JCCH Resource Center is a repository of more than 10,000 reference materials--such as books and other written publications, photographs, diaries and oral histories--that document the evolving Japanese American experience in Hawai'i. The Resource Center also provides non-commercial translation services and assists in inquiries on Japanese and Japanese American history, culture and customs.
