The group of students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni of nearly 40 people, full of cheers, hoopla and lots of team spirit for their beloved Silverswords, will leave the Honolulu campus at 11:30 a.m., take an Island Air Charter at 1 p.m. and arrive in Kahului at 1:35 p.m. "This is our first-ever charter flight to bring Chaminade supporters to the Maui Invitational, thanks to Island Air," said Be-Jay Kodama, Chaminade alumni relations officer and event organizer. Once on Maui, the group will join other loyal Silversword fans in Lahaina for the first-ever Maui Madness Kickoff Rally at 4 p.m. in the Westin Resort & Spa Hotel. More than 125 fans are expected to herald the team with its battle chant, "Go, Swords! Go Swords! Go Swords!" led by Valley Isle Cheer Elite, a nationally competitive cheering squad made up of Maui All Star cheerleaders. Fans will gear up for the Silversword victory with face painting, trivia prize games, a run-down of "10 reasons why Chaminade will upset UCLA" and a player-by-player introduction of the 2006 Silverswords men's basketball team. Sponsors of the Maui Madness Kickoff Rally include ESPN 1420 Radio, First Hawaiian Bank, Island Air, and Murphy's Bar and Grill. From there the group will head to the Lahaina Civic Center, where the enthusiasm promises to explode in the stands. ESPN2 will cover the 6:30 p.m. game live across the state and nation. During the game's half-time ceremony, Chaminade officials will also announce the initiation of its first-ever athletic-based scholarship: The Will Pounds Memorial Scholarship for Student Athletes and retire the late Will Pounds' (Silversword center 1975-1979) number 50 jersey.
