Chaminade Silverswords Swab The Decks Of The "Mighty Mo" For Immediate ReleaseContact: Kapono Ryan (808) 735-4797 or cell 429-2972 HONOLULUÑNov. 16, 2006ÑA group of students, faculty, staff and family members from Chaminade University of Honolulu will kick-off its 2nd annual "50,000 Hours" community service campaign this Saturday, Nov. 18 by scrubbing the decks of the "Mighty Mo." Approximately 22 people have already signed up for the maintenance assignment, which includes sanding, scraping and painting duties on the U.S.S. Missouri. The group will meet on Chaminade's campus at 8 a.m. to ride together to the site. Volunteers will work from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The Corporation for National and Community Service recently named Chaminade University of Honolulu to President George W. Bush's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Selected as a President's Higher Education Community Service Award Finalist for Excellence in General Community Service, the University was recognized for its outstanding work in curricular and co-curricular service-learning efforts, exemplary volunteer opportunities, efforts specific to Hurricane Katrina and its institutionalized commitment to service and volunteerism. The Chaminade Ôohana is not only serving the Oahu community this Saturday, but Chaminade Silversword men's basketball players and rotoract students are also holding a Basketball Hoops Clinic for Youth on Maui, which is a pre-Maui Invitational Tournament community service event. "Service is just ingrained in how we do things at Chaminade," said Bro. Tom Spring, coordinator of the University's annual campaign for 50,000 service hours.
