Chaminade University honors John K. Lake at spring 2007 Commencement and Mayor Hannemann to speak For Immediate ReleaseContact: Kapono Ryan (808) 735-4797 or cell 429-2972 HONOLULUÑMay 3, 2007ÑChaminade University of Honolulu will hold its spring 2007 Commencement Ceremony on Mon., May 14, at 7 p.m., in the Neal Blaisdell Arena. More than 400 Chaminade students will receive their degrees with family members and friends on hand to celebrate their achievements. Chaminade University's Kumu-in-Residence John K. Lake will receive the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa in honor of his lifetime work in the perpetuation of the Hawaiian language and culture and his legacy as a Catholic Marianist educator. Born and raised on Maui, John Matthew KeolamakaÔaøinanakalaøhuiokalaninokamehamehaÔekolu Lake received his MA in Education from the University of San Francisco and an MA in Spanish and Linguistics from the University of Valencia, Spain. Well-known to many as "Kumu Lake," he began teaching Spanish at St. Louis School in 1962 and in 1964, a formal Hawaiian Language and history program was formed. In 1993, he retired from St. Louis and moved over to Chaminade to begin teaching Hawaiian language at the college level and in 2003, was named Kumu-in-Residence. Among his many honors, Kumu Lake has been recognized as "Living Treasure of Hawai`i" by the Nu`uanu Hongpa Hongwangi and most recently "Educator of the Year" by the Native Hawaiian Education Association. He is founder of the Hawaiian Academy of Arts, Music and Dance-Halau Mele. Mayor Mufi Hannemann, the 12th mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, will be the commencement speaker. Following an illustrious career in business, government and politics, he took office on January 2, 2005. Before his election, Mayor Hannemann held posts as director of Hawaii's Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism, chief of the state's Office of International Relations, and member and chairman of the Honolulu City Council. Mayor Hannemann has also served in the administrations of four U.S. Presidents: Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. An I'olani School graduate, the mayor is a Harvard University alumnus (cum laude graduate) and founder and chairman of the Fund for the Pacific Century/Pacific Century Fellows program. He has been a Fulbright Scholar at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, and has also taught history and coached varsity basketball at I'olani School. Student speakers include salutatory undergraduate speaker Michael Schreckengost, who will receive his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, graduating With Distinction, and salutatory graduate speaker Jeannie Anne Gutierrez Pinpin, who will receive her Master of Business Administration degree.
