Chaminade University Professor Appointed To State Ethics Commission By Governor FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: Kapono Ryan (808) 735-4797 or cell (808) 429-2972 APPOINTED TO STATE ETHICS COMMISSION BY GOVERNOR HONOLULU--June 29, 2007-- Dr. Mark Brasher, an adjunct faculty member at Chaminade University, has been appointed to Hawaii's State Ethics Commission by Governor Linda Lingle. The Governor formerly conferred the commission appointment on Wed., June 27, at Washington Place. His term will expire June 30, 2010. "The State Ethics Commission provides citizen oversight of the ethical conduct of our elected and appointed officials," said Dr. Brasher. "I hope to contribute to the public's confidence that someone not involved in politics is checking to be sure our public servants are holding themselves to the highest ethical standards." Dr. Brasher, who began teaching at Chaminade in 1997, has taught various philosophy courses including ethics in the evening program on Chaminade's main campus and on every satellite location on Oahu and for the past several years, online. "Teaching ethics at Chaminade over the past ten years has forced me to come down from the 'ivory tower' conceptual considerations of moral theory and instead present ethics in an understandable and applicable way that will enrich my students' awareness of moral issues and increase their fluency in moral decision-making," Dr. Brasher said. The State Ethics Commission was established in January, 1968. The purpose of the Commission is to promote and enforce high standards of ethical conduct in state government and to preserve public confidence in public servants. The State Ethics Commission is made up of five members who are appointed by the Governor from a panel of persons nominated by the Judicial Council of the Hawaii Supreme Court. The Judicial Council nominates two individuals for each position and the Governor selects from this list of nominees. Celebrating more than 50 years of educating students for life, service and successful careers, Chaminade University offers programs of study grounded in the liberal arts with day, evening, online and accelerated courses. The main campus is located in Kaimuki at 3140 Waialae Ave., Honolulu, HI 96816, with 10 satellite locations around Oahu military bases and Catholic parishes and schools.
