CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY APPOINTS NEW DEAN FOR ITS DIVISION OF NATURAL SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS

HONOLULU--July 30, 2007- Chaminade University has appointed Dr. Helen Turner as its new dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, to serve an initial three-year term effective July 1, 2007. Previously, Dr. Turner served as the associate director of research at Queen's Medical Center and on the faculty of the John A. Burns School of Medicine. Born and raised in Great Britain, Dr. Turner holds her doctorate in immunology from the University of London and completed post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School. "Chaminade is an institution rich with opportunities," said Dr. Turner. "I was especially impressed in that the University has made a tremendous investment in the new science facilities and has a real commitment to providing cutting-edge, hands-on, science education."

In addition to her experience as an administrator, Dr. Turner is an internationally-regarded researcher seeking to understand the molecular basis of diseases such as asthma and allergy. Her research has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed grants and publications and she sits on national, and international, review boards for biomedical funding agencies. She has an extensive network of collaborating scientists within Hawaii and on the US Mainland and has trained numerous graduate students at the University of Hawaii for careers as biomedical investigators.

Spurred on by the steady growth in the number of students who have declared majors in the sciences and by overall enrollment, Chaminade began to renovate its science facilities in 2004, dedicating in February 2007-- the Frear Laboratory, an introductory wet laboratory in Henry Hall. "New facilities, combined with new course offerings, the addition of new faculty members, and increasing opportunities for Chaminade students to participate in research programs will benefit the larger Hawaii community through the work of highly trained professionals graduating from Chaminade in pre-medical studies, forensic sciences and biology," said Chaminade President Sue Wesselkamper. "We are especially excited with Dr. Turner's ability to develop new programs and research opportunities, and to open career doors in the medical and health fields for our students."

Celebrating more than 50 years of educating students for life, service and successful careers, Chaminade University offers programs of study grounded in the liberal arts with day, evening, online and accelerated courses. The main campus is located in Kaimuki at 3140 Waialae Ave., Honolulu, HI 96816, with 10 satellite locations, including on military bases, parishes and schools.
