Lili`uokalani School Receives Gift from Realty
Group
Queen Lydia Lili`uokalani Elementary School was
fortunate to be presented a check written for $500 from the members of the East
Oahu Realty Group during the school's Annual Welcome Back Assembly. Frank Diaz,
Nikki O’Rourke and Julie Meier presented the check on Wednesday, August
8th. The funds were raised from monetary collections made during their
regularly scheduled meetings. Teachers' Wish List items are also planned to be
granted in the near future. These generous donations will really go a long way
to help students at Kaimuki's historic public school on the Top of the
Hill.

Reported by Lori Yamada, PCNC - Mr. Yuen’s message to students at Welcome Back Assembly – 8/8/07
On this first occasion to meet all of you I would like
to share a story. This is a real story.... This story will be one example of my
belief system and goals I have for all of you.
A long, long time ago when I was in the 5th or 6th grade, Mr. Yuen used to deliver the newspaper right here in our neighborhood. How many of you deliver newspaper with a bicycle? Well, one Sunday morning before the sun had come up I was driving my bicycle down from the Koko Head Fire Station where I used to fold the newspapers and load them in my bag on my bike. Well, I was driving my bike down Koko Head Avenue and I lost control of my bike and fell down. Guess What? I could not pick up my bike because it was so heavy and bulky.
Question: what do you think I did? Did I ran away? Did I take the papers out of my bag and ran to every house to deliver? Did I go home and forgot about it? No, I used GLO #3. First of all... I have a question... Does anyone know what is a GLO? It means General Learner Outcome!! There are 6 GLO’s that are skills that we want you all to be very good at by the end of this school year.
Ok, back to the bike story... Question: Who knows what GLO #3 is? GLO #3 is being a “Complex Thinker”. When I dropped my bike and I could not lift it because it was too heavy, I gave it a good thought and said to myself “I cannot give up”. I thought – Onipa‘a!! (be steadfast) I must come up with a good solution! I told myself to start all over again and I will be fine. So I took out half of the newspapers in my bag, then picked up my back, leaned my bike on the church building wall, and then reloaded my bag, and then rode off to deliver my papers! I remember being able to explain this to my mother and father and they said that this process that I went through is an important one and to always remember to stop and think and then to do my best.
Remember I said at first that I will share a story of my beliefs and goals for you? Well students, I want all of you to experience a great learning experience here in school, where all of you will be “Equipped for the Future”!

concerns. The FRNC contains materials on health and safety, children’s
growth and development, getting ready for school, dealing with financial strain,
children with special needs, simple activities to promote learning, and much
more. Our FRNC was developed with support from the University of Hawaii Center
