Chaminade's Booster Club Raises
$151,000

--Exceeds First Year Goals on Initial Launch--

HONOLULU -- January 17, 2008 -- After the official launch this past summer, Chaminade University's Silversword booster club, Hui 'hinahina, has surpassed its initial goals, raising more than $151,000 to support athletics.
"Response was excellent as we conceived and developed our booster club," said Chaminade Athletics Director Kaia Hedlund. "We immediately received generous support and are especially grateful to our major booster club charter members, such as Carolyn Berry. Her matching gift of one dollar for every two dollars raised has enabled us to surpass our goals."

Hedlund expects the level of interest to grow, noting that Hui 'hinahina memberships help fund athletics' scholarships, equipment, recruiting and travel for the teams. Charter members at levels ranging from $25 to $10,000 and above provide the means for Chaminade to sponsor ten NCAA Division II teams. Booster members may designate a particular sport or donate simply to the overall athletics program.

"A strong motivation for basketball fans seems to be access to tickets to the EA Sports Maui Invitational hosted by Chaminade," said Hedlund. "This event, won again by Duke University this past November, is generally considered the nation's premier early-season basketball tournament."

Recently, the spotlight has been on Chaminade's athletics program; national news stories in Sports Illustrated and the Washington Post and on CNN, ESPN and FSN among others heralded the 25th anniversary of Chaminade's historic basketball victory over number one ranked University of Virginia. The victory later inspired the EA Sports Maui Invitational Tournament.
