$200,000 Awarded from Harold K.L. Castle
--Latest Transformations Campaign Grant to Fund Science Lab Renovations--

HONOLULU -- February 19, 2008 -- The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation awarded a $200,000 grant to Chaminade University to support the multi-phase expansion and renovation of laboratories and renovation of facilities for the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division.
This latest grant brings the total of external funding raised through the highly successful "Transformations" Overall Campaign (including both capital and other forms of external support) to $53,000,000. Through the funding from HKL Castle, three new laboratories, a faculty 'research hotel' and related support areas in Henry Hall will undergo complete renovation.

Foundation Vice President and Executive Director Terrence George praised the work of Chaminade University, noting that, "We are proud to partner with Chaminade in this endeavor. The capital improvements will benefit the community through the work of highly trained professionals graduating from Chaminade in pre-medical science, forensic sciences, environmental science, biology and mathematics."

Chaminade's Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Dr. Helen Turner, pointed to how the new facilities address the critical need for science education in Hawaii and nationwide. Moreover, Chaminade's commitment to developing a culture of research scholarship among our students and faculty will be realized through these capital improvements. "New laboratories have a catalytic effect on our faculty, course offerings and our ability to provide students with experiential learning in the STEM disciplines," she said.

The foundation previously awarded a $600,000 grant for the construction of the Harold K.L. Castle Science Center in 2002-03.

Celebrating more than 50 years of educating students for life, service and successful careers, Chaminade University offers programs of study grounded in the liberal arts with day, evening, online and accelerated courses. The main campus is located in Kaimuki at 3140 Waialae Ave., Honolulu, HI 96816, with 10 satellite locations around Oahu military bases and Catholic parishes and schools. For more information, visit the Chaminade web site at www.chaminade.edu or call (808) 735-4711.
