Representatives Marumoto and Ward
Learn STEM Skills "Put The People First"

"Put the people first," said 'Terri' the Conceptual Visions Corporation robot to Representative Gene Ward when he said he had to leave to vote in committee. At the 51st Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair, Representative Barbara Marumoto, a wizard at Jeopardy also visited with Terri and she said to the robot "The Santa Maria, La Nina, and La Pinta," after a brief pause, "What are the names of Christopher Columbus' ships that crossed the Atlantic Ocean?" Said the Sprockit Series 5 robot programmed and incorporated with artificial intelligence.

Since 1958, the Hawaii Academy of Science has sponsored the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair (HSSEF) to recognize and reward excellence in scientific achievement by secondary students who have completed science project at their schools, with their science clubs or independently. All students in grades 6-12 in Hawaii are eligible to participate.

This year Representative Gene Ward was asked to judge in the competition of the Hawaii Academy of Science. "I was very impressed with the intelligence and creativity expressed by our young people in this science fair. I think the Governor's investment in STEM academies (science technology, engineering and math) and robot competition is going to pay big dividends some day," Rep. Ward said. "I would like to see the present robots turned over to licensed tutorials some day so the kids of our islands can have a "talking Google" at their disposal in our schools," Ward concluded.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Pacific region presented 'Terri' the education robotic device. Currently, 'Terri' is being used to teach robotics curriculum at the university level. Programs are also being developed to bring 'Terri' into the classroom for remedial education and for the children with special needs. For more information visit: www.noaa.gov or visit
