Representative Barbara Marumoto Joins Governor Lingle on Kids Day

PRESS RELEASE
Representative Barbara Marumoto
(R) District 19
Office 808-586-6310

Representative Barbara Marumoto Joins Governor Lingle on Kids Day

Honolulu - It was Perry on the right, Price on the left with Governor Lingle, Representatives Barbara Marumoto and Cynthia Thielen in the middle. Representatives Marumoto and Thielen met with the Governor in front of the capitol to support the selling of The Honolulu Advertiser's special-section KIDS DAY 2008 newspaper. Governor Lingle stood curbside with Michael W. Perry and Larry Price to sell newspapers to benefit Parents and Children Together (PACT).

The special section, themed "The Ocean and Me," featured essays, poems and artwork done by students in grades one through 12 who entered an island wide contest, which was sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, (NOAA).

Governor Lingle held the world premiere of the documentary film Voyage to Kure to support ocean efforts; and First Lady Laura Bush made a historical visit to Washington Place to unveil the chosen name Papahanaumokuakea for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument (NWHI). In 2006, President George W. Bush made the decision to designate the NWHI as a Marine National Monument instead of a sanctuary, which allows the federal government to establish a collaborative effort in protecting the region for future generations. Governor Linda Lingle is currently proactively pursuing efforts to have the monument declared a World Heritage site.

The special section of the Honolulu Advertiser showcases the work of public and private schoolchildren, as well as home-schooled youngsters. Prizes of the artwork included tickets to opening night of "Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy" at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.
"It was great for the Governor and Perry and Price to dedicate their time to help raise funds to prevent domestic violence," said Representative Marumoto.
