Chaminade Professor is National Finalist for
Faculty Service-Learning Award

HONOLULU--May 27--Campus Compact has named Chaminade University Professor Wayne Tanna, J.D., LL.M., as one of eight national finalists for the 2008 Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning. The award drew a distinguished group of nominees from campuses across the United States, representing a broad range of institutional types.

Tanna, whose accounting students help the working poor with tax refunds, was the only one selected from Hawaii and is involved in a wide-spectrum of service-learning and community service activities.

This national award, presented yearly to one faculty member for outstanding contributions to the community through service-learning, a teaching and learning method that integrates community work into the curriculum, was given this year to Dr. Richard Pan of University of California-Davis, founder and director of Communities and Physicians Together.

"We commend all faculty members who spur their students towards greatness through service-learning, and are especially thankful for Professor Tanna," said Chaminade President Sue Wesselkamper. "He has been instrumental in our service-learning program, especially through his innovative tax clinics which sharpen the accounting skills of our students as they help the poor with their taxes."

This is the 14th year that Campus Compact has presented the Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning to recognize exemplary leadership in advancing the civic learning of students, including public scholarship, building campus commitment to service-learning and civic engagement, and fostering community partnerships.

Campus Compact is a nonprofit coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents--representing some 6 million students--who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. As the only national association dedicated to this mission, Campus Compact is a leader in building civic engagement into campus and academic life.
