Tsuitate A Standing Wooden Screen Is Unveiled At Iolani Palace ![]() Representative Barbara Marumoto (R) District 19 Office 808-586-6310 The Friends of Iolani Palace held an unveiling of a recently-restored tsuitate, standing wooden screen, at Iolani Palace. The screen is a fine example of Japanese craftsmanship and is decorated in the Shibayama style with inlays of horn, tortoise-shell, mother-of-pearl, ivory, coral and cast metal on a gold-dusted and lacquered surface. The Friends of Iolani Palace are always delighted to bring back furnishings that had been at the Palace in monarchy days. It is visible the upstairs Music Room. Representative Barbara Marumoto and Senator Brian Taniguchi were among the guests attending the event. The screen was a gift from Robert W. Irwin to King Kalakaua. The King had appointed Irwin as a commissioner in charge of immigration, and in that position, Irwin negotiated a treaty to bring in the first group of contract laborers (Kanyaku Imin) from Japan. In 1885 when Mr. & Mrs. Irwin arrived with the Imin, he brought the screen as a gift to the King.
