HONOLULU -- January 3, 2009 -- Chaminade University announced that Dr. Mary Civille (Sue) Wesselkamper, died peacefully early Saturday morning, January 3, 2009 at approximately 3:45 a.m. due to final complications in her battle against cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends in the comfort of her home.

Dr. Wesselkamper, who had taken a medical leave of absence from Chaminade in fall 2008 upon advisement of her doctors, was Chaminade University's eighth and longest serving president. In December, Chaminade University conferred upon Dr. Wesselkamper its degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa, in recognition of her unparalleled accomplishments during her 13-year tenure at Chaminade.

'President Sue, as we all endearingly referred to her, taught us to embrace our mission and identity as a Marianist University, said Chaminade's acting president, Bro. Bernard Ploeger, S.M., Ph.D. 'She was deeply committed to this university and centered our focus on always serving our students well. We will miss her keenly.

'On a personal note, I have had the honor of knowing Sue through her family from my time at the University of Dayton. Sue invited me to come to Hawaii and to work with her here at Chaminade University. Our work together over these last 13 years has created a very deep friendship and a profound sense of shared purpose, Ploeger said.

Born on March 27, 1942, Dr. Wesselkamper was 66 years old. Services are pending.
