HONOLULU--March 25, 2009--Chaminade University announced that Brother Bernard Ploeger, S.M., Ph.D. (name pronounced: Bern'-erd Play-gur) has been officially appointed as Chaminade's ninth president. The Board of Regents voted unanimously to accept the Presidential Selection Committee's recommendation of Bro. Ploeger in their 2 p.m. meeting today. Shortly after that vote, the Regents made the offer to Bro. Ploeger, who then officially accepted the appointment. His presidency begins immediately.

Ploeger was one of three finalists chosen by the presidential selection committee who went through rigorous rounds of interviews and meetings with students, staff, faculty, and other constituencies.

Considered the chief architect of Chaminade's strategic plan for 2008-2013, Ploeger will become Chaminade's ninth president. He has been an integral part of the Transformations overall campaign, which successfully raised $66.5 million during the presidency of Dr. Sue Wesselkamper and the successful completion of the university's WASC review with commendations this year. Ploeger and Wesselkamper have been close colleagues, working in tandem to revive Chaminade from its 1990s troubles to the fortified sustainability and forward momentum that it now experiences.

Ploeger has served the university as its executive vice president and provost since arriving at Chaminade in 2001 at the invitation of Wesselkamper, who died in January. He has stepped up to the plate as Chaminade's interim president twice: first in 2005 when Wesselkamper was initially diagnosed with cancer until her return and currently since fall 2008 upon Wesselkamper's final medical leave of absence.

As provost and executive vice president, Ploeger worked intensively with deans and divisional faculty to strengthen the quality of Chaminade's curriculum and increase its currency and relevance for students. He has promoted academic excellence and scholarship.

Previously, Ploeger served at the University Of Dayton as its vice president for administration/ senior vice president for administration from 1986 to 2001 before accepting Wesselkamper's invitation to Chaminade.

Celebrating more than 50 years of educating students for life, service and successful careers, Chaminade University offers programs of study grounded in the liberal arts with day, evening, online and accelerated courses. The main campus is located in Ka'imuki at 3140 Waialae Ave., Honolulu, HI 96816, with 10 satellite locations around Oahu.
