CHAMINADE'S ENROLLMENT NUMBERS JUMP
--New student numbers second best year ever--

HONOLULU - August 17, 2009 - More than 375 new students will show up at Chaminade University on August 24 for classes. That may not seem like much in comparison to a large state university system, but for Chaminade, that adds up to a 15% increase in first-year students and a 16% increase in transfer students in new enrollments since last year. Approximately 50% of those new students are from public and private schools from across the state including students from Iolani School, Kamehameha Schools, La Pietra Hawaii School for Girls, Mid-Pacific Institute and Punahou School, as well as from local Catholic schools such as Maryknoll School, St. Francis School and Saint Louis School.

"We believe our strong academic programs have begun to gain increased visibility. In addition, the current economic climate has led many Hawaii students to take a closer look at what is available here at home," said Bro. Bernard Ploeger, president of Chaminade University. "When they visit campus, prospective students find much to recommend Chaminade. It confirms that it is not necessary to leave Hawaii to receive an excellent college education."

Strong programs in criminal justice and behavioral sciences, education, pre-med and health careers, forensics sciences, and professional studies have attracted students, especially when taught with low faculty to student ratios (an average of 16 students per class). With solid academic offerings, students are set to complete their undergraduate degrees in four years. Also with six residential life halls, the university is able to offer housing to students from Hawaii, as well as to those from out of state. Financial aid packages and scholarship opportunities have also made a Chaminade education affordable.

Chaminade's dean of enrollment management, Joy Bouey, said that Chaminade has made a deliberate decision to incorporate the new social media to engage prospective students to inform them of the university's outstanding programs and the many opportunities offered. "For example, this summer, 21 of our students were able to pursue research internships at major mainland universities," she pointed out. "Our students are also able to spend a semester at our two sister schools."
