Alexander & Baldwin Foundation Awards
$5,000 Grant to Chaminade Communication Program

HONOLULU - August 28, 2009 The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation awarded Chaminade University a $5,000 grant to support a newly developed service-learning photography course in the communication department.

The course, which focuses on the principles and techniques of professional photography, allows Chaminade students to share knowledge and experience gained through the class with underprivileged children in the community. Students are paired with children from M ili Land Transitional Housing to teach them photography skills and collaborate with them on creative projects. The children's photography is then exhibited and made available for purchase to benefit the Lei Fund, a scholarship developed specifically for children in transitional housing.

"We like the 'efficiency' of this grant which not only serves to support Chaminade and the availability of higher education options in Hawaii, but also makes a positive impact on the homeless youth in our community," said Meredith Ching, Chair of the Hawaii Contributions Committee for Alexander & Baldwin Foundation. "It's a great 'two-fer' and we applaud Chaminade for their holistic approach to education."

The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation is a charitable foundation funded by Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. and its operating companies, including Matson Navigation Company, Inc., A&B Properties, Inc., and Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company. The Foundation's objective is to improve the quality of life in the communities where Alexander & Baldwin operates and its employees reside.
