Southeast Asia – Typhoon Ketsana Response
September 30, 2009

Philippine National Red Cross

Thousands of volunteers from the Philippine National Red Cross are working
around the clock. Search and rescue operations have finished, and
volunteers are now performing disaster assessments and providing shelter
and relief to affected families.

Of the 571 evacuation centers being operated in the Philippines, the
Philippine National Red Cross is managing 165 evacuation centers to serve
up to 150,000 people with food and shelter. The centers are providing meals,
blankets and comfort items after flash floods suddenly inundated homes and
neighborhoods.

Philippine National Red Cross water search and rescue teams acted to save
people stranded on rooftops and high walls. Using boats, the 20 specially-
trained teams brought more than 400 people to Red Cross evacuation
centers in Manila and Benguet.

Vietnam National Red Cross

The Vietnam National Red Cross assisted in evacuating 167,000 people from
flood-prone areas prior to the storm’s landfall.

In addition, thousands of volunteers have been mobilized to carry out damage
assessments and to provide food and water to those affected.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Asia
Pacific Disaster Management Unit is working with the Philippine National Red
Cross and Vietnam National Red Cross to coordinate response actions for the
global Red Cross network.
