  • Hawaii's Public Libraries will Offer Programs and Events to Honor Edward Gorey

The Hawaii State Public Library System will offer free programs and events in celebration of “Musings of Mystery and Alphabets of Agony: The Work of Edward Gorey,” an exhibition that will be on display at the University of Hawaii Art Gallery from September 26 through December 10, 2010.
Edward Gorey (1925-2000), a celebrated, prolific American author and artist was revered for his distinctly elegant, enigmatic, and eerie black and white illustrations. The exhibition features over 700 books, book jackets, prints, posters, original drawings, postcards, handmade dolls, and other ephemera from the John A. Carollo-Edward Gorey Collection in the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library’s Special Research Collections, with special loans courtesy of The Edward Gorey Charitable Trust, New York City and the Edward Gorey House, Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts.

The following Library programs and events are scheduled:
“An Edward Gorey Children’s Story Time” - reading and craft activity presented by UH Art Gallery staff and friends; suitable for pre-school through age 7, accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
  • Oct. 2, Nov. 13, 10:30 a.m. at Hawaii State Library Edna Allyn Room for Children
  • Oct. 9, 10:30 a.m. at Kapolei Public Library
  • Nov. 27, 10:30 a.m. at Kailua Public Library

“Musings Over Manga: Exploring Edward Gorey’s Techniques Through Comics” by Brady Evans, Exhibition Intern, University of Hawaii Art Gallery; suitable for ages 10 and older. Sketch along with the artist and expand your manga drawing skills.

  • Nov. 6, 11:30 a.m. at Hawaii State Library, First Floor Reading Room

“A Strange and Untimely Alphabet Revealed Through Line: Drawing Inspiration from Edward Gorey’s ‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’” - suitable for ages 10 and older. Construct an alphabet book, draw your own Gorey-esque figures using crosshatching and reveal your own dark and unexpected tale.

“Exhibition: Drawings Inspired by Edward Gorey’s ‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’”

“Unleashing Creativity with Alphabets of Nonsense and Creatures of Imagination” by Lisa Yoshihara, Director, University of Hawaii Art Gallery; suitable for ages 10 and older; under age 10 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Participants will make their own book and can fill it with their drawings and texts inspired by Gorey.
  • Oct.14, 6:30 p.m. at Hawaii State Library, First Floor Reading Room
“Form, Light, and Crosshatching” by James Kuroda, Senior Exhibit Specialist, Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts; suitable for ages 10 and older. Participants will draw and complete a character using crosshatching.
  • Dec. 9, 6:30 p.m. at Hawaii State Library, First Floor Reading Room
