• Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise Screens Keiki Vision at East Honolulu Schools

Honolulu, Hawaii -- More than 30% of school age children have vision difficulties, yet only half of all children will have an eye exam before completing high school. To help detect vision problems at an early age, the Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise is providing free Keiki Vision screening to more than 125 third graders at Kahala and Kaimuki area elementary schools.

The Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise Keiki Vision screening is being held at Kahala Elementary School today and at Liholiho Elementary School on February 28.

According to Gloria King, president of The Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise, Keiki Vision helps families detect vision problems that could potentially result in learning difficulties or permanent eye damage. "Nearly 20% of children aged 9-15 need glasses and 90% of these have not received them. We want to help our children have a brighter future through early detection of vision difficulties that may affect their ability to succeed in school," King said.

Vicki Shim, Keiki Vision chair for The Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise, added that the vision screenings are pass/fail and easy to perform. Shim said the screening takes approximately 5-7 minutes per student and identifies children with nearsighted, farsighted and binocular problems. A written report is given to all students who attend the screening. She noted that the vision screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye examination.

The Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise is an active, community-involved service organization that helps causes both locally and internationally, financially and through action, especially youth and those in need in our community.
