Bank of Hawaii to be Title Sponsor of Goodwill Goes GLAM! for a Second Year

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii announced that Bank of Hawaii will be the official title sponsor of their second annual event -- Bank of Hawaii presents Goodwill Goes GLAM! The four-day event takes place from September 19 -- 22, 2013, at the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. The Gala and VIP Presale will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2013 followed by public GLAM! Sale days from September 20 -22, 2013.

Laura Smith, President/CEO of Goodwill Industries of Hawaii, Inc. states; "We're honored that Bank of Hawaii has chosen to be the title sponsor of Goodwill Goes GLAM! for the second consecutive year. In 2012, Bank of Hawaii's support greatly contributed to the success of our inaugural event. Their commitment to community service is company-wide as many Bank of Hawaii employees volunteered their time to support the event-week activities. Once again, Bank of Hawaii's support of our retail and public awareness event will further our non-profit mission -- to help people with employment barriers to reach their full potential and become self-sufficient."

Peter Ho, Bank of Hawaii chairman, president and CEO, shared, "Last year, we were delighted to be a part of the inaugural Goodwill Goes GLAM! event. It certainly lived up to its promise of being the ultimate shopping event for bargain hunters in Hawaii. More importantly, the event benefited Goodwill Industries' vital programs that empower thousands of people throughout Hawaii to prepare for employment each year."

About Goodwill
Goodwill Industries of Hawaii, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation that helps people with employment barriers to reach their full potential and become self-sufficient.

Since 1959, we have provided job placement, career development, education, training, employment and support services for people throughout the state. Over 10,000 Hawaii residents each year have benefitted from Goodwill's services, and thousands have found employment in our community.

Philosophy
For more than 100 years, Goodwill Industries has championed a philosophy of community service through the power of work. In 1902, the founder of this philosophy, Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist Minister, took burlap bags into Boston's wealthier neighborhoods collecting donations. He invited community residents with disabilities and other disadvantages to help repair and sell the donations and used the revenue made through the sales to pay the workers. This philosophy is evident throughout Hawaii's Goodwill, and in Goodwills throughout the world.

Goodwill Industries International
Goodwill Industries of Hawaii (GIH) is an autonomous, dues-paying member of Goodwill Industries International, a growing network of Goodwill organizations throughout the world. There are currently 183 full member Goodwill organizations in the United States and Canada. Since the organization's founding in 1902, Goodwill has helped more than 9 million people. Globally, Goodwill Industries International announced its 21st Century Initiative to serve 20 million people by the year 2020.

Goodwill Leadership and Accreditation
Goodwill is led by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of civic and business leaders from the community. Goodwill has been fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for more than 30 years, and is certified by NISH. Goodwill maintains active membership in the National Rehabilitation Association, Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations, Retail Merchants of Hawaii, Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, Aloha United Way, Hawaii Employers Council, West Oahu Economic Development Association, and the Kapolei Chamber of Commerce.

Funding and Revenue
Goodwill is rare among not-for-profit agencies because most of its revenue is earned. Our unique, self-sustaining system enables us to serve thousands in Hawaii each year.

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii is funded through:
  • Retail sales at our community stores
  • Service contracts (in competition with private enterprise)
  • City, state and federal job training grants
  • Support from individuals and corporations
